Here is the LINK

Just a few things!!!

Hey Grizzlies!

Can you believe it..it is our last week of school. So many amazing things happened this year. Even though we are not able to finish the school year together, please know that you are all in my thoughts! Please keep your eyes on this blog this summer. I will be updating here and on Seesaw with events that may be a little fun for all of you.

Later this week we will be posting the Summer Reading Lists/Challenge that is open for everyone! Take some time and look at it.

For now, GUESS WHAT.. J.K.Rowling, author of Harry Potter, is releasing an unpublished children's story, chapter by chapter. She is also including a competition for illustrations..the book is called "The Ickabog". The book has nothing to do with Harry Potter, in fact it is a fairy tale, but yeah, she is writing and asking for help on illustrations!  Check out the article HERE

END OF YEAR

Hey Everyone!

I created a newsletter to share with the district about what we did in the Grant Elementary Library this year. I wanted to share the newsletter with all of you as well. We checked out almost 40,000 books this year, BEFORE we had to leave. Thank you all for making this such as amazing year. I cannot wait until next year!  GO GRIZZLIES!!

What to Read???????????????

If I had a dollar for every time I got asked "my child is above grade level in Reading, what should they read?" I would be a rich person. To be honest, reading is a personal choice. To be even more honest, it is a personal choice AND a conversation that parents and students need to have TOGETHER. I am MORE than happy to make suggestions, but to keep students reading, there needs to be a lot of choice involved.

However, as with most things, with higher literacy leveled books, comes more mature content, that just because your child CAN read them, they may not quite be ready TO READ them. That is where you and your child really need to have some conversations. But of course, I want to help you come up with a list of books that MAYBE your child would enjoy!!

The Children's Book Council produces, every year, a list of books that would be consider for those who are reading at a higher than grade level area. I would STRONGLY encourage all families (and students), regardless of reading level, to take a look at this list.  Many would make great read alouds or read alongs for everyone to do together, for maybe 20 to 30 minutes a day. They cover a great list of topics and interests, and I will admit, I have read a good majority of them, and I really enjoyed them, so they span MANY age levels. 😄

Please take a look at the list and if you need help in finding any of these books OR using the district AIM cards for your students, I am happy to help!

LEGO Challenge

Alright Grizzlies!! As Mother Nature has decided to turn the weather chilly again, how about we get our creative juices flowing.  I have loved LEGOs since I was a little girl (yes, they had them back then). They were not as fancy as what you all have, but we could spend hours just creating fun!

NASA and LEGOs recently partnered together for Earth Day (April 22) to "Build A Better Planet". Take a look at this LEGO LINK to see how you can interpret how you feel you can make the Earth a better place. LOTS of really fun ideas here.  Get creative Grizzlies!  There will be a place on Seesaw where you can share your creation if you want!  Take a brain break from Dreambox and Lexia (or your new workbooks) and create.

Star Wars Day

Like many of you, I am a HUGE fan of Star Wars. One of my favorite days will be on Monday, May 4th..many refer to this day as "May the 4th" after the famous quote in Star Wars "May the force by with you". One of the amazing websites I follow to add in some Science and fun into the library is called "Science Buddies". On Sunday, May 3rd you will all receive an "Assignment" in Seesaw from me. This is not actually an assignment, I can't give those, but I can give you some fun activities to try on May 4th.

The link included is to Science Buddies and gives you 15 activities to try with items that you may just have lying around. Take a look at the activites, complete one if you want (or more if you can). Share a picture of what you do on either Seesaw or this blog, either is fine with me.  I hope you all have fun!!

May the 4th be with you!!!

MAGIC TREEHOUSE NEWS

Hey Everyone!  I meant to share this yesterday but with all of the sunshine, I completely forgot.

Annie and Jack from Magic Treehouse fame are coming to your computer! Yep, Mary Pope Osborne, along with Random House publishing have launced "Magic Treehouse Home Adventures". From Monday, April 27th through May 22nd, you may access a TON of online activities, centered around the Magic Treehouse Adventures.  You will be able to participate in videos, activities, crafts, and games tied to weekly themes.

The best part about this whole thing..YOU, yes YOU, can ask Ms. Osborne questions about your favorite Magic Treehouse Adventures! Ms. Osborne will be hosting video events every Monday and Friday where readers can submit any question about her books that you may have (school appropriate of course). Click on the link below for more information!

4/27/2020 - Update

Hey Grizzlies, just a quick update on a few things.

  • Thank you everyone who posted guesses in the "National Library Week" trivia. Congratulations to Ella and Tony Cronk, Ella Schultz. Payton Flick and Harrison Meyer on your wins. I will be mailing your gift cards to you, so keep your eyes on the mailbox!
  • We do not yet know when you will be asked to return your library books. As soon as we do we will get you that information. For now, please keep them in a safe place. Please note that we are still asking you to return them, but we have to make sure that we return them in a safe manner. If you are not sure of what books you have checked out, please email Mrs. Panther at panther.jen@iowacityschools.org
  • IF you have lost a library book OR it has been damaged, you may replace the book anyway you feel good about. Many times you can find the book on Amazon for a much better price than what I would have to charge. It does not have to be replaced with the same binding (hardcover vs. softcover), but the title must be the same. If you do not want to order online, I do have to charge you the cost of the book that is listed in our catalog.
I hope were all able to get outside this past weekend. I know my family spent all day Sunday outside. I may or may not have remembered to add sunscreen to my face and shoulders!  You be the judge!!

Mrs. Panther misses all of her Grizzlies!!!

4/22 - INFORMATION ON ONLINE READING

Hey Grizzlies, Mrs. Panther here!

So, since school will not be physically taking place for the rest of the year, many of you may be wanting new books. While I cannot give you a print copy of books, many publishers and book sellers have given us AMAZING access to there websites for eBooks and Audiobooks as well. I wanted to highlight one of them here.

I have already added the MACKINVIA account to my Library Clever pages. To access the materials that are available for FREE, please click on the link you see. You will need to enter in your Google account information, remember that will be the first two initials of your first name, first three digits of your last name, your graduation year and @icstudents.org (ie: jepan20@icstudents.org) and then your password. If you have any questions on that, please email me or contact your teacher.

Once there you may browse through the collection, favorite the ones you like or just pick one and start reading. Important note: if you open one to start reading, before you leave, make sure to hit "checkout". That makes sure that noone else can check it out until you are done reading it or return it.

Any questions, email me at panther.jen@iowacityschools.org

OMG, HARRY POTTER NEWS!!

Hey my wonderful Grizzlies!

I am sure some of you have already checked it out, but J.K. Rowling launched a new website dedicated to the beloved Harry Potter series on April 1st. It has many wonderful features including read alouds, craft ideas, articles, quizzes and puzzles. You don't have to be a huge Harry Potter fan to enjoy this site. Heck, it might even get you interested to read the whole series!

I know that my daughters and I have had a TON of fun on this site already!

District AIM Card

Grant Families,

I have been yielding a lot of questions recently regarding the district AIM cards that were handed out to students before we left for Winter Break.  Now more than ever, with access to the school libraries and public libraries being cut off due to COVID-19, these cards may come in handy.  The AIM Card (Access to Information and Materials) allows every student in our district to have access to the Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty eBooks and audiobooks.  It also, when they reopen, allow access to books in hand.

I am including a link to directions on how to access AIM materials online. This is completely an optional resource, but hey, who wouldn't love free access to books.  If you have any questions OR your child has lost their AIM ID#, please email me at panther.jen@iowacityschools.org for their card number.  Also, when you sign in, make sure that you are selecting "ICCSD STUDENT" or you will not be able to access all 3(three) of the public library catalogs.

Have a great day!

Wonderful Opportunity

Hey Grizzlies!

While I was taking a needed brain break (which I hope you are taking too), I got onto my Facebook page really quick. One of my amazing friends, who is a former teacher with Clear Creek Amana, shared the following with me!

One of my favorite authors and illustrators, Jan Brett will be reading her beautiful picture book, The Easter Egg, LIVE, on Facebook. In order to see her read the book, you (or better yet) your parents will need to login to Facebook and follow Jan Brett.  I have personally been able to hear Jan Brett read many of her books IN PERSON, and she just knows the right spot to be adding in the fun to bring her stories to life.  If you have a moment, check it out. It should take no more than 15 minutes out of your day, and I promise you, the illustrations alone will make it worth your time.

Filling In

Hey Grizzlies!

I hope you are all taking some time to enjoy this beautiful day while continuing to practice social distancing. Remember, the faster we follow the guidelines given to us, the faster we can all come back together. I know I speak for myself and ALL Of the Grizzly Staff when I say we all miss you and cannot wait to see you again.

By now you have all been given information from your classroom teachers on Dreambox and Lexia. If you have any questions with any of that OR you are having difficulties, please feel free to contact me at panther.jen@iowacityschools.org I will do my best to solve any problems that you may be having.

I will be posting a link for Book Madness here!  Please listen to the books being read and then vote for your favorite. This is how we will be completing Book Madness this year, at least until we get the chance to return (HOPEFULLY)!!!

I know that it may feel as if a whole bunch of information is being thrown at you, quickly, and that it is always changing. Please remember that we want you to learn, but also to stay healthy and happy. I am hoping to be able to join you and your teachers in some Zoom meetings soon. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Miss you all!

Upcoming Info

Alright Grizzlies,

Another week of Social Distancing is among us. I know that a lot has been thrown at your in the last few days, so I am hoping that you all took some time to relax and enjoy your family this weekend. We haven't had our Wii on in about 3 years, but pulled it out this last week and have Mario Kart battles and some Wii Fit Obstacle Course battles as well.

All in all I think I am doing OK, but then I think of all of you and realize just how much I miss you all. I have a big meeting tomorrow to discuss our further communication with our students and what we as Specials teachers can do to help everyone out. We also have a few more stories to read to get Book Madness up and running, so please keep your eye open for the links when we are finished.

My first book review will be posted tomorrow .. it is a mystery book, literally, it falls in the Mystery genre. A very quick read!!

Catching Up

Hey All,

Wednesday and Thursday - I just wanted to update you with what I have been up to in the last few days..thankfully it wasn't all inside stuff.  I am really trying to make sure that I get outside and clear my head, so I can be as there for my family as I can.  Thankfully we have a lot of trails around our area to explore and still maintain proper social distancing. It is also fun when I can meet a friend for this walk and catch up..thankfully our trails are wide enough to maintain the 6ft recommendations. I really hope that you all are taking time to be outside as well. I also spent a lot of time catching up with my fellow Teacher Librarians utilizing the Zoom meeting app. Man, is that fun. There are times when I think we have far too much technology in our lives and we have forgotten about enjoying the great outdoors, but for me, I am thankful we have it right now. This way I can keep in touch with so many people that mean a lot to me.  Speaking of which, I hope that you all had a chance to see all of the videos in the Flip Grid we made.  I guarantee you all that we miss you so much and cannot wait until we are all together again.

Friday - I had the pleasure to meet up with 2 other district Teacher Librarians to help hand out Chromebooks to our families that need a little technology help. I am so happy that we are able to offer this to our families. It was also great to sit around and catch up with my friends. Of course, we mainly talked about books, but we also talked about how much we all miss our students.  I hope you are all sensing a theme here.

Saturday - NORMALCY!! I cleaned today. It felt like a normal Saturday to me. Yes, it started with rain, but the sun is nice (while we have it). I hope you all have an amazing Saturday and I will "talk" to you all soon.

OMG!!!

My how things have changed since yesterday. Your teachers, all of us, are working hard to make sure that you have what you need to continue to succeed while we are at home. Please make sure and take time for yourself everyday. It is OK to want to be alone for a bit. It is also OK to be outside, just be safe with your distance from others.

On a side note, the district Librarians are working on getting the recordings done for Book Madness. We all wanted guest readers for this event, so why not have all of the Librarians act as guest readers. More on that tomorrow.

Miss you!!!

Hey Grizzlies!

It's Mrs. Panther here. I just want you all to know how much I miss each and everyone of you. I hope you are all taking care of yourself and your families while we are apart. I am hoping and praying that we all get to see each other soon.

As all of you know, we were supposed to start Book Madness when we returned from Spring Break. I was a little bummed when I found out that we would not be returning to school until April 13th, so I immediately starting contacting authors and publishers about ways that I could still get you all Book Madness and not get in trouble for it. You see, even as an educator I have to be careful with what I put on the internet. I can get in some BIG trouble if I were to just read you a book and share the reading on the internet, because I did not have permission from the author or publisher to do so. After all, they are people too that need to make a living and feed their families. LUCKILY our nation's authors and publishers really stepped it up and gave us some freedom with posting us reading to you. I still have a lot of rules I have to follow, but I can read to you, we can vote for our favorites and we can continue Book Madness.

I will be creating a private YouTube channel that only Grant families will have access to. I will be posting the link to that site in a newletter that will be coming out from Mr. Turnis and on this Blog. We will be voting on the book as a FULL SCHOOL, so everyone who wants to watch the videos can vote on their favorite. We will start this HOPEFULLY tomorrow. We will have a quick turnaround for voting for the first round. I will have the link for the Google Form attached to a blog post. Please click on the link and vote for your favorites.

I think that is all for now. If I think of anything else, I will just blog about it.  Maybe post a "question a day" until we are all back together!

Miss you all!
Mrs. Panther
